The Valley Mills Band Program is made up of students in 6th through 12th grades. The program has five ensembles; Valley Mills Beginner Band, Valley Mills Junior High Band, Valley Mills Jazz Band, Valley Mills High School Concert Band, and the most visible: Valley Mills Eagle Marching Band.
The Valley Mills Band Program focuses on creating excellent musicians as well as promoting academic excellence. Students in the program learn the principles of respect, honor, and pride.
Valley Mills Beginner Band
The Valley Mills Beginner Band is composed of 6th grade students who begin focusing on the fundamentals of playing a musical instrument. Basic music fundamentals include; posture, hand position, embouchure development, air flow, learning music notation, and learning music theory.
At the end of their 5th grade year students meet with a Band Director to choose what instrument would be best for them. Students can choose from; flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and baritone.
Percussion, tuba, and french horn will be added either in the 2nd semester of 6th Grade Band or as they progress into 7th Grade Band.
Valley Mills Junior High Band
The Valley Mills Junior High Band is composed of 7th and 8th graders and compounds on the fundamentals taught in the first year of playing, as well as developing ensemble fundamentals. Ensemble skills are balancing of melodic parts, blending of sounds between sections, and focusing on the music as a whole instead of the individual parts.
The Junior High Band competes in a number of competitions throughout the school year such as; Central Texas Honor Band, Solo and Ensemble, UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest, and other music festivals across the state.
Valley Mills High School Band
The Valley Mills High School Band is composed of students in 9th-12th grade and focuses on mastering all musical concepts. The VMHS Band is also known as the Valley Mills Eagle Marching Band during the Fall.
The Valley Mills High School Band competes in the ATSSB All Region Competition, CENTEX Honor Band, UIL Solo and Ensemble, UIL Marching Contest, UIL Area Contest, UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest, and the ATSSB Outstanding Performance Series.
In 2014 the Valley Mills High School Band was selected as a TMEA Honor Band Finalist, placing 6th in the entire state in Class A for their UIL musical selections. The VM High School Band was also selected as an ATSSB OPS State Finalist for their recording of Adrenaline Engines by Randall Standridge which placed 4th in the competition.
