A piece of space history comes to Valley Mills High School

A tile from the Space Shuttle now lives in the Valley Mills High School Library. Science teacher Stephanie Murray obtained the tile from NASA through a program to preserve the tiles to inspire the next generation of space explorers, scientists and engineers. There were 7,000 lightweight heat shield tiles being offered. The tiles protected the shuttle from extreme heat during re-entry. Assistant Superintendent Gaye Lynn Seawright also showed her personal collection of NASA memorabilia, including embroidered patches that a NASA employee wears; one from the Space Shuttle; a commemorative patch of the Shuttle Flights from 1981-2011; Apollo 13; Apollo 11; Skylab; the Columbia with Young and Crippen; the First Shuttle Flight; Apollo 1 with Grissom, White and Chaffee, who died in a fire inside the module; the Columbia that blew up over parts of Texas in 2003; and one from the Challenger, which blew up and carried the only teacher and civilian ever to go on a mission.
